A$AP Yams also known as Steven Rodriguez, Puerto Rican, Born November 13th, 1988 died on January 18, 2015. Yams always had a dream to be involved in the music industry and to stay out out of the street life and not get tangled into drug dealing and such.
Growing up in the projects of Harlem wasn’t easy but Yams always found a way to make the best of it. s a teen he would go down to the local Jamaican record stores and sell mixtapes in front , organizing rap battles and made easy money, it was a little side hustle for him. Doing this made him interested in starting his own group with childhood friends that had a 90’s twist. He always was a trendsetter and felt that fashion was a timeless thing which is why him and A$AP Mob fashion is based on the 80’s and 90’s look. His love of fashion lead him to create a fashion line “BlackOut Boys”.
A$AP Mob is a hip hop collective group from Harlem that was formed by A$AP Yams, Bari and IIIz in 2007. The group consist of rappers, fashion designers, video directors, and producers. ASAP stands for Always Strive and Prosper. But the main people who carry the torch for ‘Asap’ are the rappers such as A$AP Rocky, Ferg, Twelvyy, Nast, Ant, and the record producer Ty Beats. Others that some don’t know about are Asap Lou, Da$h, Dom, J.Scott, Av and Josh. Each member of the mob has their own unique style of music or fashion, they all connect to each other as a group but approach it in different ways. A$AP Rocky was one of the first members of A$AP Mob and was how it became big and public. He came out with a YouTube hit, “Purple Swag” which lead him to be signed with RCA Records and Polo Grounds Music. Here he was given a budget to start his own label, A$AP Worldwide with Asap Yams. From that point on, other ASAP artists such as Ferg and Nast came out with radio hits. “Work” by Asap Ferg and “Trillmatic” by A$ap Nast (featuring other A$AP artists) and later came out with their own debut albums.
Before A$ap Rocky came into the light he had a performance for the Sundance Film Festival where he was showcasing his new movie, in which he stars, he will be starring in called “DOPE” (talk more about this day for asap rocky & the movie)
Yams had a huge impact on A$AP Rocky’s new and was the co executive producer for it. Beside a business partner Yams was more like a brother and bestfriend for him , working together for years they creating a close bond with one another. Yams meet Rocky through Asap Bari which who was raving about Rocky’s skills to Yam for a long time and thought that he had future potential to be apart of the ASAP movement. From watching many interviews and tour videos with them together on Youtube it shows how much of a connection they had with one another and even though they were business partners they never took things too serious they were always having fun and partying.
Steven “ASAP Yams” Rodriguez was found unconscious by his roommate early Sunday (Jan. 18) morning. He was transported to Brooklyn's Woodhull Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead. There were no signs of trauma and a cause of death is pending an autopsy report. But some people are also saying that he could of died from sleep apnea not drugs overdose but scientifically there is no sign on what he actually died of. Sleep Apnea is a common disorder in which you have one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while you sleep. Many rumors were going around saying his cause of death was from drugs, many people thought that because of his Instagram feed , where he was often pictured drinking lean , a popular drink from Texas that is made up Promethazine w/Codeine VC , Original Sprite Soda and Jolly rancher candy, or smoking weed. But all that is a lie and has been cleared after days of silence for the first time Asap rocky came out and had an interview with BillBoard about how he felt about the situation ie January 25, 2015 2:55 AM EST. A$AP Rocky and A$AP Ant cleared that Yams cause of death was not from drugs. Yams being the cofounder of A$AP MOB it was hard for A$ap Rocky to come out and speak out about him, and even bury him. The funeral took place on January 25th at the same church were other legends had their funerals, including Aaliyah and Biggie.
