Roll out the red-carpet, because it’s time! Award season is here and celebrities are gracing us with their best red-carpet looks.
Three different trends dominated the red carpet. First and foremost was “girlhood.” The “girlhood” trend is taking over the fashion world and the red carpet isn’t excluded. “Girlhood” is similar to the balletcore and coquette aesthetics. WhoWhatWear calls it “... a fashion aesthetic that dabels in the nostalgia surrounding clothing associated with being a young girl, it's embodied through bows, sequins, and pretty shades.”
One of the best examples of this is Margot Robbie’s dress at the Golden Globes. “Robbie continued to pay tribute to her Barbie character on the red carpet at the Golden Globes, wearing a sequin-heavy, hot-pink Armani Privé gown,” said Business Insider. Throughout her press tour for Barbie, she wore many outfits inspired by real Barbies. This specific look was inspired by the 1977 Superstar Barbie.

Not everyone pulled it off though, including Ali Wong, who was nominated for her role in Beef, at the Emmys. Wong’s Louis Vuitton dress combined sequins with floral and looked like two different dresses put together. Something similar also happened with Claire Foy's silver sequined Rodarte gown at the Governer’s Awards, which had ruffle sleeves that seemed like an afterthought.
Another trend that is taking over is red. We first saw this in fall when little pops of red began making an appearance. Red shoes, maybe some red tights. As we progressed into early winter, red became more of a statement rather than an accent. With the little red dress taking over holiday style, it got carried on into the New Year. Suki Waterhouse's scarlet backless Valentino gown is a perfect example. It had to be adjusted for her baby bump, but it still wowed at the Emmys.
But Selena Gomez's red Armani Prive dress at the Golden Globes is in the middle of good and bad. Cece Burger, a 6th grade Literary Arts student said, “It looked good until I took a closer look and realized it was like a gown as if it was dropped on the floor of a subway bathroom.”
Business Insider thinks differently, as they included Gomez on their list of best dressed stars of 2024. “Selena Gomez started awards season off strong in a red dress with bold cutouts at the Golden Globes.”

The last trend that dominated the red carpet was bridal. Many celebrities wore white looks that were originally designed for brides and weddings. Greta Lee is a great example of this. She was nominated for her role in Past Lives. Lee wore a backless champagne Loewe gown that seemed reminiscent of old-Hollywood glamor.
Not only women wore white looks. Johnathan Bailey wore off-white custom Givenchy suit to the Golden Globes, proving that the bridal trend isn’t confined to dresses and gowns.
Although, Olivia Munn’s cream two-piece Maticevski set looked wrinkled by the time she reached the red-carpet at the Governer’s Awards. She attended as John Mulaney’s date, since Mulaney was the host of the precursor to the Oscars . The creases make her look unprofessional. Business Insider reported, "In some photographs of her entrance, the ensemble's fabric appeared to be wrinkled. Intentional or not, the creases took away from the overall elegance of Munn's look.”

Many other celebrities flopped while on the red-carpet.
“They were all boring as heck except for Margot Robbie, whose stylist had taste from the pounds of glitter and plastic they’ve consumed,”
Whatever your opinion, award season is always a good scope for what trends will dominate the coming year.
