"The disney family is DEEPLY upset about all of the REcENT anti-LGBTQ+ bills, FINALLY they speak up."-- Cb Omand, 6th grade
At a recent human rights convention, Charlee Corra came out as transgender and rebuts many anti-LGBTQ+ bills that have been or are being passed in the USA.
Corra, also called Charlee Disney, is the Grandson of Roy O. Disney, a co-founder of the Disney company. Corra is a 30 year old high school biology teacher In Florida which adds to the intensity of this statement. It is said that Corra knew early on that he was gay but he recently came out as transgender. “Charlee Corra, a member of the Disney family, came out publicly as transgender and condemned anti-LGBTQ bills in a recent interview,” says NBC news.
The Disney family was greatly upset when bills limiting LGBTQ+ rights started to pop up around the country. “Disney also said the family was ‘heartbroken’ when Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the Parental Rights in Education Act, which critics have dubbed the "Don't Say Gay or Trans” bill because it prohibits classroom instruction of sexual orientation or gender identity with students in grades K-3 or in a way deemed developmentally or age inappropriate,” says NBC news.
Corra’s stepfather, Roy P. Disney was openly upset, for obvious reasons, when he found out about the bills. “‘Equality matters deeply to us, especially because our child, Charlee, is transgender and a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community,’ Roy wrote in a statement,” says The New York Times. P. Disney’s sister, Abigail Disney, tweeted about how proud she was after P. Disney issued his statement.

“The “Don’t Say Gay” bill bars teachers from discussing sexual orientation and gender issues with students below fourth grade. Disney, the company, also recently slammed the law and announced that it stands by members of the LGBTQ community,” reports The New York Times.
“In Roy Disney's email, he also said that he, his wife and their two kids were ‘heartbroken’ when the Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed into the law what's known by critics as the "Don't Say Gay" law,” says CBS news. Disney is in a predicament seeing as a lot of the places where anti-LGBTQ bills are being passed are states that bring in a lot of revenue for them, for example Florida has Disneyland which makes around 17 billion dollars a year.
“I will not allow a woke corporation based in California to run our state,” Says Ron DeSantis, Florida's governor, “Disney has gotten away with special deals from the state of Florida for way too long.” What Mr. DeSantis is referring to the 25,000 acre theme park, more commonly known as Disney World. Disney has been allowed to privately run that plot of land for the past 55 years. “The Florida Senate voted on Wednesday to eliminate the special zone, which is called the Reedy Creek Improvement District,” says The New York Times. This means that Disney will no longer have full control over what they put into the park. This elimination of the Reedy Creek ‘Special Zone’ would take place June 2023
In addition to Florida’s government speaking out, Disney is also issuing statements, " ‘The fight isn't over,’ Roy Disney told The Washington Times. ‘And we are determined to do everything we can to stop this from happening in other places.’ ” says CBS news. As Roy O. Disney said, the fight is not over, for either Florida nor Disney.
