Take a look around. You might look to the left and see Charles Dickens feasting on fish and chips, look to the right and you might see Victorian folk selling jewelry. Bask in dozens of colorful characters straight out of the 1800s and marvel at the sight of the charming shops and handcrafted goods. Walk around 120,000 square feet of Victorian London. This wonderful place is called The Great Dickens Christmas Fair.
And you’ve got one more weekend to take advantage of this magical experience. Through Dec. 16 and 17 you can visit The Great Dickens Christmas Fair 2023 at the Cow Palace on 2600 Geneva Ave, Daly City. Of course the Dickens fair is expected to see plenty of visitors, Denise ,the spokesperson for the Dickens fair, “The Great Dickens Christmas Fair will see about 55,000 visitors over the 5-week run.”
It all started in 1970, when a party opened for three weekends hosted by the Patterson family at a warehouse at San Francisco’s Fisherman's Wharf. The party moved to Cow Palace and now, it has evolved over the years into what it’s known as today. After a post-quarantine drive-thru experience last year proved very unsuccessful due to the pandemic and lack of interest, the Dickens fair is now back.
The Dickens Fair has over 100 shops to fulfill your browsing needs. They range from Victorian clothing, antiquarian books to ornaments and jewelry. When you enter the Cow Palace, you might see the Patterson and Sons Shop by the front gate where you can pick up a copy of The Illustrated London Chimes, a newspaper complete with schedules, menus and a detailed map of Cow Palace and its Victorian streets. There are a number of jewelry shops including Pale Moon, Benitez jewelers, Astrolabes & Puzzle Rings, and Nuyens Art Studio.
There are also many clothing shops like Samiah’s Caravan, a store that sells a variety of Tailcoats and Frock coats. Another clothing store is Primrose Parlour that sells Victorian-inspired hats and fascinators. There are also restaurants like the HMS Fish & Chips that serves traditional English fish and chips, oysters, calamari, and New England clam chowder. Another shop is Mr. Punch’s Pasta, a shop that serves farfalle (bowtie pasta), fresh garden salad with cucumber, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, and ranch or italian dressing, side of meatballs and garlic sourdough bread.
There are a variety of activities and games to play when you walk around the Cow Palace, including fencing at the Corinthian Rose Sporting Club, a perfect place to find a socially acceptable way to stab someone. Or you can visit The Dart Parlour, the London Printer to see an authentic 1860s Printer, and stop by Silhouettes by Jordan to get your very own print of your silhouette.
If you’re visiting the Dickens Fair, you’ll see plenty of characters, Denise the spokesperson for The Great Dickens Christmas Fair says, “The Great Dickens Christmas Fair is an immersive adventure with hundreds of colorful characters from literature and history. Meet Father Christmas, Ebenezer Scrooge, Mr. & Mrs. Fezziwig, or the Ghost of Christmas Present throughout four acres of Victorian theaters, pubs, and dance halls. Enticing aromas of roasted chestnuts and hearty foods fill the air. Dozens of lamplit shops are filled to overflowing with handmade gifts. The Great Dickens Christmas Fair is a time traveler's delight and a one-of-a-kind way to celebrate the holidays.”
The Dickens Christmas fair is nearing its end this year so visit while you still can!
