"On August 27th there was a mass of teens and many fights broke out, this lead to a shot being fired and a stabbing." --Cb Omand, 8th grade.
A fight broke out on August 27th at Bay Street Mall, a popular shopping spot in Emeryville, where there was a large gathering of teens, the group estimated to be anywhere from 100-400 people. Many in attendance were there for National Movie Day, where theaters sold tickets for $4 each, whereas others were just gathered at the mall to shop. However, according to the Emeryville Paper, The Evil Eye, “Bay Street shoppers and moviegoers were abruptly evacuated Sunday afternoon amid reports of a large brawl involving hundreds of juveniles and gunfire.”
Sinead Piqe-McQueen, an 8th grader from OSA who was there right before the incident broke out described the scene. “I was there that day with my friends, we had gone to see Barbie and when we got out of the movie we saw a huge gathering of kids who looked around our age. We left right after our movie ended [4:30 pm] and I found out about the incident a few hours later from my friend,” Piqe-McQeen said. She also explained that if she and her friends had gone to the later showing as they had initially planned, they would have been there in the moment.
The unrest began around 4:30 p.m. when a group of teenagers began disturbing people in stores. The SF Chronicle wrote that “workers at an unidentified business at the East Bay Mall reported that about 50 young adults were ‘causing a disturbance’ inside the store.”

Throughout the next few hours, more teens flooded into Bay Street as several fights broke out. As the fights got continuously worse, many people started to evacuate from stores and get back to their cars, including people in the theaters when they were escorted out of the building.
There was one shot fired, and it was from a firearm that was dropped on the third floor near the entrance to the AMC movie theater. “A bystander reported hearing a single gunshot near Bay Street and Ohlone Way on the mall’s southern side shortly before 6 p.m., but police did not locate any shooting victims or suspects in the incident,” says the SF Chronicle.
“A panicked voice could be heard yelling ‘Shots Fired! Shots Fired!’ on the police scanner with the dispatcher responding ‘We’re calling everybody.’ Everybody means CHP [California Highway Patrol] and mutual aid from Berkeley PD and Oakland PD,” reported The Evil Eye.
“Bay Street Emeryville fight and shooting and now I’m stuck in the parking garage cuz kids wanted to be goofy,” says Twitter user @N__renae who was at Bay Street on August 27th.
“Police are canvassing for a person with the gun. Police are investigating if a dropped firearm from the crowd was discharged before being taken by fleeing teens,” stated a post from the Citizen app, a social media tool that monitors 911 communication and sends users location-based security alerts in real time.
A woman had been stabbed in the neck at around 7 p.m., on Elm Street. “Officers found a juvenile victim, and emergency medical responders rendered aid and transported the juvenile to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries,” reported NBC Bay Area.
“With officers patrolling the area, most of the crowds dispersed by 8:30 p.m., police said. There were no other reports of injuries or looting,” states NBC Bay Area. The incident lasted for around 4 hours, luckily there was only one injury and it was not life-threatening. There has been one arrest of someone who might have been involved in starting the incident.
