"I love kanye as a artist, but as a human being, he has to be hold accountable." -- Justin Walton

It has been almost one month since rap icon, Kanye west went viral (once again) for his bizarre tweets and interviews regarding his political views and his relationship with the president.
Kanye west has not only been a staple in the hip-hop industry but has also been a staple in pop culture for the past 10 years, and still continues to be one of the most talked about celebrities to this day. Kanye is a Rapper, songwriter, producer, enterpature, and fashion designer from the southside of Chicago. Kanye started out his career as a record producer and songwriter. He made a name for himself by working with artist such as Jay z, Beyonce, talib kweli, and Mos def. It wasn't until 2004 when Kanye dropped his second studio album “college dropout” which brought his career to a whole nother level. Since then he has put out 19 projects, has won 3 major awards, created his own record label, married Kim Kardashian, and started his own fashion line that is worth thousand of dollars. He is the definition of a worldwide superstar!
On April 15, Kanye reactivated his twitter account after being off social media for nearly two years. His first tweets back on twitter were on how to live your best life. “Be here now. Be in the moment. Now is the greatest moment of our lives, it just keeps on getting better,” he writes. In my opinion, this quote has no sign of disrespect in it at all. It was actually a tweet I re-posted on my personal account. Later on that evening, Kanye then went on another rant, talking about Donald Trump and Obama, while then posting a photo of himself in a “Make America great again” hat. He first writes “Donald Trump is my brother. We are both dragon energy. I Love him. I Love everyone. I don't agree with everything trump does. That’s what makes us individuals. And we have the right to think independently”. He also wrote, “Obama was in office for eight years and nothing in Chicago changed”.
A couple weeks later after Kanye's rants he then appeared on TMZ for a 30 minute interview. In the Interview Kanye brings up slavery and says, “400 years of slavery, that sounds like a choice. You were there for 400 years with all of yall. That sounds like they were mentally imprisoned”. After hearing this interview, this is when I personally lost so much respect for Kanye as a person. Although Kanye has the right provide his own opinion, him saying these statements as a black man with a huge platform has has affected the black community, his own peers in the industry, and the youth.
Artist such as Janelle Monae, John legend, T.I, Chance the rapper, and Snoop Dogg have all sent shots out to Kanye because of what he said . John legend tweeted out “I imagine there’s some comfort in imagining a future without racism and projecting that onto the present. I do love that great, brilliant artists have the power to imagine a better future. But artists can’t be blind to the truth.” Janelle Monae said, “ “I believe in free thinking, but I don’t believe in free thinking if it’s rooted in — or at the expense of — the oppressed. If your free thinking is used as fuel by oppressors to continue to oppress black people and minorities, I believe that it is not okay at all. T.I not only tweeted his thoughts on what kanye said, but also put out a song with kanye called “Ye vs the People” going back and forth talking about each others political views and thoughts on what kanye has been saying. “All them times you sounded crazy, we defended you, homie, Not just to be let down when we depend on you, homie, That's why it's important to know what direction you're goin' now, 'Cause everything that you built can be destroyed and torn down”.
Kanye west is no doubt one of the best artists and creatives ever! But what kanye has said about his own people, slavery, and the black lives matter movement is not acceptable. I love kanye as a artist, but as a human being, he has to be hold accountable.
