After her recent Eras Tour and with the start of her next International Tour, Taylor Swift has been in the brightest spotlight, and has long since been brought onto an unthought of stage for her fans, the National Football League. Ever since her attendance at the Kansas City Chiefs’ football game on the 24th of September, all eyes have been on her and Travis Kelce, Kansas City tight end, and Swift’s new boyfriend. After their dating rumors were confirmed, the couple became a spectacle to both worlds.Following the game, and the many other Chiefs games afterwards that Taylor Swift has been cheering for in a suite, Swifties quickly jumped onto the perfection of Swift and Kelces’ relationship. Fans used social media to spread their affinity, showing, and in some cases psychoanalyzing, just how perfect they believe the celebrity couple is together. While both are age 33; Swift’s lucky number that can be seen on the hands of herself and concert goers, 13, plus Kelce’s jersey number, 87, create a perfect 100.
Their relationship only became more of an object to followers during Swift’s concert in Buenos Aires, Argentina. During the show, she changed her lyrics to the song “Karma” leading to an internet frenzy. When the pop megastar sang, “Karma is the guy on the Chiefs coming straight home to me.” in replace of, “Karma is the guy on the screen,” Kelce described that he was dumbfounded. On his his podcast with his brother Jason Kelce, New Heights, he stated, “…well, I might have had a little bit of a clue, but definitely when I heard it come out of her mouth, it still shocked me.”
But the American football player wasn't the only one to benefit from a boost in recognition. According to Independent, actor Ryan Reynolds, seen spectating in the same suite as Sift during the September 24 game reportedly stated that, “The NFL right now is reaching a kind of fever pitch that is usually only reserved for the Super Bowl, but here we are at the fourth or fifth game of the year and it’s already happening.” The NFL temporarily changed their profile picture to Swift on X, formerly known as Twitter, and their Instagram bio to “Chiefs are 2-0 as Swifties” Along with social media, the cameras closely followed Swift and the other stars watching the game.
However, this new publicity drawing in Swifties was controversial for the football fandom. Many fans of the sport were not pleased with the overcoverage, turning heads away from the game. According to Independent, many American football aficionados claimed the NFL needed to “calm down” suggesting a forced stop to their Taylor Swift content.“We frequently change our bios and profile imagery based on what’s happening in and around our games, as well as culturally,” the NFL responded.
Recently in the Chiefs matches, a pattern has arose. During a game CBS displayed on screen Kelce’s significantly higher stats with Swift watching in the stands versus when he is “left to his own devices”. And now with her Eras Tour wrapped up for the 2023 portion, we can expect to see the couple together in the Chiefs games leading up to the Super Bowl.
