"The Golden Globes finally returned to the air this year, after not being televised in 2022. Now, however, most of the 2023 Golden Globe winners are Oscar nominated."--Mackenzie Luna, 7th grade.
Why were they not televised in 2022?
According to The Los Angeles Times, “Los Angeles Times investigation raised concerns about the group’s ethics and financial practices, which revealed that not one of its then-87 members was Black.” This therefore caused NBC to decide in 2021 to pull the event off the air in 2022, forcing the Golden Globes to be handed out in a private ceremony.
Netflix, Warner Bros, HBO, and Amazon Studios all cut ties with the HFPA (Hollywood Foreign Press Association), the group that owns the Golden Globes. Celebrities also took action against the scandal.
Tom Cruise, whom many know as Pete Mitchell, otherwise known as “Maverick” in the Top Gun films, returned his 3 Golden Globes. He did it as a protest against the HFPA, in 2021. He was not present at the 2023 Golden Globes, however, despite Top Gun: Maverick being nominated twice.
Scarlett Johansson and fellow Avengers co-star Mark Ruffalo both called out the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for the scandal. With Johanson stating via People, “‘Unless there is necessary fundamental reform within the organization, I believe it is time that we take a step back from the HFPA and focus on the importance and strength of unity within our unions and the industry as a whole.’”
Ruffalo posted in a tweet, “It's discouraging to see the HFPA, which has gained prominence and profited handsomely from their involvement with filmmakers and actors, resist the change that is being asked of them from many of the groups that have been most disenfranchised by their culture of secrecy and exclusion.” He added that it’s “Now is the time to step up,” and “Right the wrongs of the past.”
Ruffalo also added that he did not feel happy or proud to have won an award. “Our industry is embracing the opportunity for greater equality in this beautiful moment. It is not perfect and long overdue but it is clear what must happen and how. The Justice Movement is offering all of us, the HFPA, and every other entertainment entity, a good way forward. We should all follow suit. It is our audiences and our highest sense of decency that we are ultimately serving with these changes. They are both deserving,” Ruffalo finished.
Since then, according to EW, pressure on the organization continued to build, with further scandals. The diversity strategist Shaun Harper, left the HFPA only after a month since he had been hired. This occurred shortly after HFPA member Philip Berk sent an alleged email that called the Black Lives Matter initiative a "racist hate movement.” Berk was then expelled from the HFPA.
2023 Golden Globes
At the Beverly Hilton Hotel, stars returned for the event, with show-stopping outfits on the red carpet.
Rihanna and boyfriend A$AP Rocky entered late, although the media managed to capture the delayed-entrance. Host Jared Charmichale left the audience in crickets after a few jokes in his monologue. The camera left viewers at home watching someone's foot for a few seconds. The pianist Chloe Flower received lots of backlash for playing winners off the stage, although that’s a whole other story, which you could read here. To top it all off, after the show, multiple stars tested positive for COVID 19, including Jamie Lee Curtis
