The 2023 Emmy Awards aired on Fox on January 15th. However, the 2024 Emmy Awards are set to take place in September, creating confusion as 2024 will have two Emmy Award shows in the same year. Here is the complete breakdown of the reason, the winners, and the upcoming show.
The Emmy Awards usually take place on the Sunday before the first day of Fall in September. Last year, however, because of the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, they didn’t take place, and it slipped the minds of many people.
The writers' strike ended up concluding in late September, specifically on the 27th. The actors' strike then ended on November 7th.
Emmy organizers then decided to postpone the awards to January 2024, to “give the industry time to resolve the labor disputes,” explained theNew York Times. The nominees were released in July of 2023, making it six months between the nominations to the actual awards show.
According to The Guardian, “The decision to move the [Emmy] awards has, however, landed it in a strange place as it is now happening the week after the [2024] Golden Globes, the night after the Critics Choice Awards and the month before the Screen Actors Guild awards.”
This marks the second time that the Emmy Awards have been postponed. The first time the awards were postponed was in 2001, because of the 9/11 Twin Tower attacks. The show was to be aired 5 days after the tragedy, therefore being postponed until November 4th, 2001.
The 2023 awards were aired on January 15th, held at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles. To have been considered for the 2023 Emmys, “A television show, limited series, or made-for-TV film must have been released between June 1, 2022, and May 31, 2023,” described Entertainment Weekly. Comedian and actor Anthony Anderson hosted this year's ceremony, along with his mom, who threw occasional jokes into the audience.
The original Grey’s Anatomy cast made an appearance to celebrate the show for being the longest running primetime medical drama in TV history. Musician Elton John was awarded an Emmy this year for Outstanding Variety Special (live), making him the 19th EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) winner, ever.
Succession had seven awards by the end of the night, including one for Best Drama. Abbot Elementary star and writer, “Quinta Brunson was victorious as outstanding lead actress in a comedy series,” explained People. This was especially important as this made Brunson the first Black woman to win Outstanding Lead Actress in 42 years.
Niecy Nash took the awards for supporting actress for Dahmer-Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. Jeremy Allen White took home the Emmy for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for The Bear, and Ayo Edebiri took one home for supporting actress. The Bear also won the Outstanding Comedy Series category. The Netflix movie BEEF accepted 8 awards, including Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series, Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series, and many more.
Cb Omand, an 8th grade Oakland School for the Arts student read about the Emmy winners this year. “I really liked The Bear, I don’t really know why it won best comedy, because I personally don’t think it was much of a comedy,” Omand explained, “but I was happy that it won a lot of awards,” she added. Omand also added her hopes for the upcoming 76th Emmys, “I really hope the next Emmys will be better than the last one this year.”
The 76th Emmy Awards will happen in September, but the Television Academy has yet to announce the specific date for the event, although it will be on a Sunday. The nominees will be announced on July 17th.
