For over 20 years, rapper Lil Wayne has been one of the most influential hip-hop artists in the music industry. Coming out of New Orleans, Louisiana, Wayne was first discovered in 1991 at the age of nine by Louisiana rapper/music mogul Brian Williams, also known as “Birdman.” Later, Wayne signed a deal with his record Label “Cash Money records,” becoming the youngest artist on the label at only ten years old.
For years, Wayne has been the face of Cash money records, winning a total of five grammys, 15 BET Awards, one being an “I am Hip-Hop award,” one American music award, and one MOBO (Music of Black Origin award). He is also known for discovering two of the most prominent artist in the music industry today, Canadian rapper, singer, songwriter, and actor Drake, and Trinidadian-American rapper, songwriter, model, and actor Nicki Minaj. Since signing with Cash Money Records, Lil Wayne has a total of 42 projects selling over 100 million records worldwide.
Some of Wayne's most notable projects are Tha Carter albums. Since 2004, Wayne has been releasing a series of albums called Tha Carter. They’re home to the most famous version of Wayne— the Wayne who gave us “A milli”, “Got money”, and “Go DJ.” In 2011, Wayne released Tha Carter IV album which has now gone triple platinum, selling over 5.5 million copies worldwide. Due to Legal and financial issues with label owner Birdman, it took Wayne seven years to release the album fans have been waiting on for years, Tha Carter V.
The Carter V was released on September 28, 2018 Which also happened to be on Wayne's 36th birthday. The album has features from artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj, Snoop Dogg, Swizz Beatz, Travis Scott, the late XXXTENTACION, his daughter Reginae Carter, and his mother Jacida Carter. Most of the songs on the album are all at least four years old as well. According to Rolling Stone, this album is Wayne's most personal album yet. Topics in this album include suicide, family, love, women, religion, the rap game, growing up in the streets, and where he sees himself now.
The album starts off with a somber piece from Wayne's mother Jacida Carter on the track “I love You Dwayne.”
Mama proud of you. You done came so far. I can't wait for your album to come out. lot of people ask me when it's coming out. They can't wait for your album to come out. I'm just so proud of you” she says. Ms. Carter then addresses how Wayne’s life hasn't been the easiest and how he’s even gone through things that she’s never knew about. “I just pray things go well with you in life. I thank the lord, because I know you have been through a lot that I don't even know about. Mama love you. I love you Dwayne, with all my heart.
On the last song of the album “Let it all work out,” Wayne address his suicide attempt at the age of 12. He tells the story on he found his mothers pistol and almost ended it all.
I found my momma's pistol where she always hide it. I cry, put it to my head and thought about it. Nobody was home to stop me, so I called my auntie, Hung up, then put the gun up to my heart and pondered. Too much was on my conscience to be smart about it. Too torn apart about it. I aim where my heart was pounding. I shot it, and I woke up with blood all around me. It's mine, I didn't die, but as I was dying, God came to my side and we talked about it. He sold me another life and he made a prophet.
Before the album dropped Young Money President Mack Maine did a interview with Billboard telling them that Wayne was going to discuss his suicide attempt on the album. Maine said, “He just told me one day he was ready to address it now. Just being an adult, reaching a level of maturity and comfort where it’s like, ‘I want to talk about this because I know a lot of people out here might be going through that.’”
Another popular song off the Carter V is Wayne's collab with Swizz beatz called “Uproar.” “Uproar” is a up-beat party type of song that has already gone viral all around the world due to the dance challenge that was created to it on social media. On this song, Wayne raps about money, women, guns and jewelry, and also warns his enemies to stop playing with him before he causes an “Uproar.”
In my opinion, this is one of Wayne’s best body of work. He truly gave the fans what they were waiting for, which is just timeless music.
