Ted Lasso, a show that has won the hearts of many fans, released the first episode of the third season on March 15th. However, the recent season has already raised many questions. Will there be another season? What is the cast up to? Will AFC Richmond win?--Mackenzie Luna, 7th grade
Ted Lasso is an Apple TV show about a small-time college football coach from Kansas, who is hired to coach a professional soccer team, AFC Richmond, despite having minimal experience. For the purpose of this article, we’ll be focusing a little more specifically on season 3. *Next paragraph contains many spoilers, read at your own expense*
*Season 3 recap: Recently, we’ve learned that Ted’s ex wife is dating their former marriage counselor. Roy’s attitude is slightly altered due to Keeley and his break-up, and Rebecca deals with the thought of a family. AFC Richmond is facing a hard time with the recently joined player Zava deciding to retire mid-season. Keeley is getting very close with a woman, as Trent Crimm continues his notes for his book. We also see the player Colin struggle to openly come out. *
The show first released August 14th, 2020 during the pandemic. According to Variety, The development for the character began in the early 2000’s, while Brendan Hunt (Beard) and Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso) were in Amsterdam, performing at a comedy club called Boom Chicago. The character, Ted Lasso, debuted in an ad for NBC Sports back in 2013 to try to get America's attention. Eventually, Sudeikis decided to keep Ted Lasso on, and approached Bill Lawrence about the idea of the show. The rest is now history.
Most Apple TV shows end seasons with ten episodes, so we can assume that Ted Lasso Season 3 will not be any different. However, according to E News, Ted Lasso will finally, sadly, conclude. Here’s what the cast had to say about the end.
With typical humor from Brett Goldstein, he said “It was planned as three [seasons]. Spoiler alert: everyone dies.” Goldstein plays Roy Kent.
Nick Mohammed, who plays the under-estimated kit man, Nathan Shelly, detailed original plans. “The writers were really open from the start and said that in their heads, they mapped out three-season arcs,” he explained. “But that doesn’t mean that it definitely has to come to an end. There’s no reason why it couldn’t continue. So, we’ll see. I hope there’s more, but who knows.”
Jason Sudeikis not only talked about the end, but also addressed a potential spin off- series, telling E News at the premiere of Ted Lasso, “I think we have a talented enough writing staff, an incredible cast, tremendous production and post-production crew.” He continued, “They definitely have the ability and there's plenty of water left in that sponge to squeeze out.”
Ted Lasso has won multiple Emmy Awards as of the 2021 and 2022 ceremonies, and currently holds a 92% Rotten Tomato Score.
Rose Wendling, a 7th Grade Theater student, explained her thoughts about the show so far.
“I prefer season one better. I just don’t think this season is the best.” Wendling shrugged her shoulders and shook her head, before answering what she predicts will happen at the end of the season for Ted.
“I don’t think that they will win the championship, and I think he will be in a good place, and will remain in England, and probably NOT go back to America.”
Wendling added the reason as to why she enjoys watching the show. “I love the show, mainly because I think it’s a really heartwarming show and I liked soccer in the first place, and the plot is more interesting than you would think. It’s nice to watch with my family,” “My favorite episode is Carol Of the Bells, season 2.”
Alex Stullman, a 7th Grade Literary Arts student, shared his thoughts about the new season. “I really like it so far. I like how they made sports interesting for me, since sports are just hell because it’s just so boring and I just sleep through games.” Stullman continued, “I think they’ve gotten a lot of depth into the characters which it’s cool, since it does have a pretty extensive cast.”
Stullman also had thoughts on what will happen to Ted Lasso at the end of the season, much different to what Wendling predicted.
“I’m pretty sure he’ll go back to Kansas, because you would not leave your child to grow up without you if you cared about them. And he’s really going through a midlife crisis, you know his wife left him and he clearly has some anxiety.”
Upon learning during our interview that this is the last season, Ella Marcial, a 7th Grade Fashion Design student, looked up in both surprise and horror and said, “It IS!? Oh I'm so sorry.” She then laughed it off and continued. “I hope to see at the end of the season, for Ted, that he will date Zava.” She paused and took it back, “No, maybe, he’ll date Jamie Tartt. He’ll find love at some point I think.”
Marcial gave her rating of the show overall as well as hopes of what she’ll see in the final episodes. “I would rate it a five star. No, six stars, no ten. 1,000.” She moved on. “I also hope to see that Ted Lasso’s ex-wife stops dating their old marriage counselor. Because it’s weird, and gross. And that Ted stops being an alcoholic, and that Roy Kent finds love so he’s not a grumpy old man.”
A few days after the first season 3 episode was released, main cast members made an appearance at the White House (on March 20th) to address mental health. The group included Jason Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, and Toheeb Jimoh, while being joined by White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre at the briefing podium. The crew stopped by for the small briefing for a short time ahead of meeting with president Biden and The First Lady.
In the show mental health is a large topic, as Ted Lasso often experiences sudden panic attacks, affecting him in his immediate surroundings.
Before the cast was even addressed however, a “Today News Africa reporter Simon Ateba accused Jean-Pierre (White House Press Secretary) of discrimination,” wrote Vanity Fair. Multiple journalists tried to calm Ateba during the ordeal. Jean-Pierre herself said “Welcome to the press briefing room,” before apologizing to the Ted Lasso stars behind her. “Are we gonna behave?” she asked the press at one point, later adding, “What has just occurred this last ten, fifteen minutes is unacceptable.” The cast stood behind her uncomfortably, smiling and looking at the floor, until they were addressed.
Watch the whole incident here.
After the whole situation was settled, Jason Sudeikis began his briefing.
“I know in this town, a lot of folks don’t always agree and don’t always feel heard, seen, listened to. But I truly believe we should all do our best to help take care of each other. That’s my own personal belief. I think that’s something that everyone up here on stage believes in.”
While the cast at the White House was supported by real reporters, actor James Lance, who plays reporter Trent Crimm in Ted Lasso, was also in the audience, portraying his character and asking questions, after receiving a good laugh from the room.
Now Ted Lasso is an amazing, well written, heartwarming show. It’s going to be sad to say goodbye to A.F.C Richmond, but all arcs must end at some point. I highly recommend this show, and hope you can understand what makes this one special.
