“On May 28th Disney Released a live action movie,Cruella featuring Emma Stone, with reference to the villain from the 1961 classic, 101 Dalmatians.”-- Adeline Sylvia, 7th grade.
101 Dalmatians is about a dalmatian named Pongo who falls in love with another dalmatian named Perdita. Pongo tricks his owner Roger to meet Perdita’s owner Anita, and the owners get married. Later, Perdita gives birth to 15 puppies, and Anita's old school friend wants to buy them all, when they decline her offer, Cruella hires the Badun brothers to steal them… so she can make a fur coat.
But… Cruella is about Estella the Clever Thief who wants to make a name for herself in the fashion world, who teams up with the Badun brothers who she lives with on the streets of London. When she meets the fashion legend Baroness Von Hellman, she remembers that the Baroness killed her mother, and sets forth a plan of revenge.
I found this movie quite interesting as my past opinion on Cruella was that she was a terrible person—but this movie brings a new light to the character. The movie definitely showed that De Vill wasn't a terrible person who made coats out of puppy skins (even out of the 47 costumes she wore, none contained fur) who tried to kill her old friend’s dogs, as in the end of the movie you see that she had gifted Pongo and Perdita to Roger and Anita.
I think the point of the movie is there is always more than one side to any story, and that sometimes people just need someone to hate—like when Cruella pretended she had killed Baroness Von Hellman’s dogs—--giving her the best line of the film, “People do need a villain to believe in, so i'm happy to fit the bill.”
If you would like to see Cruella It's available to watch on Disney plus
