Who can forget Phineas and Ferb? The classic Disney kids animation series about two fun-loving brothers, inventing something new or going on a crazy adventure each day. The show lasted eight years, from 2007 to 2015 and for the first time since then (not counting their cameos in Milo Murphy’s Law), we get to see Phineas and Ferb on screen in the brand new Phineas And Ferb The Movie: Candace Against The Universe directed by Dan Povenmire.
The movie is true to the show from the start, with a colorful musical number featuring Candace (Ashley Tisdale) who fans of the show will remember was always bent on busting her brothers for their shenanigans while never fully succeeding. This first scene sets the tone of the movie, which proceeds to take on a more Candace-based point of view while also giving fans a quick refresher on the show.
From there,Candace and her friend Vanessa (Kelly Hu) accidentally board an alien spacecraft that takes them to the planet FeeblaOot. Candace is welcomed by the planet’s inhabitants and is quickly labeled “The Chosen One” by their queen, Super Super Big Doctor (Ali Wong) who says that Candace emits a special element called Remarkalodium. Meanwhile, Phineas (Vincent Martella), Ferb (Thomas Brodie-Sangster), Isabella (Alyson Stoner), Buford (Bobby Gaylor), Baljeet (Maulik Pancholy), Evil Scientist Doctor Doofenshmirtz (Dan Povenmire) and Perry the Platypus (Dee Bradley Baker) all team up to go on an intergalactic voyage to save Candace.
After Candace refuses to leave with her brothers, she learns that the people of FeeblaOot are actually under mind control by an alien plant called “Mama” that ejects mind-controlling spores. She also learns that Remarkalodium is just carbon dioxide, meaning that any human can be “The Chosen One.” Once they all return back to Earth, there is a final showdown where Candace defeats all of the aliens and their queen.
By the end, the movie delivers all that it promised, comedy, adventure, creativity, aliens, musical numbers and strong themes of friends and family. Candace learns that she is valued by her brothers and in the end decides not to ‘bust’ them even though she could have.
This movie has a consistent theme of characters that have been ignored or underappreciated throughout the series. For example, Perry The Platypus is shown doing all sorts of strenuous things to keep Phineas, Ferb, Candace and Doofenshmirtz out of danger, and yet they give themselves credit. This is also shown with the people of FeeblaOot who are known as “Cowards.” They work for Super Super Big Doctor because they are afraid of everything. The biggest representation of this is Candace who has pretty much only been shown wanting to ruin her brother's fun until this point. All in all, it is a strong and satisfying comeback after five years and is debatably the best Phineas and Ferb movie yet seeing as the others were made while the show was still on TV. And while I definitely hope that there are more Phineas and Ferb movies to come, this would be an excellent send off if there aren’t.
