"Melanie Martinez is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. Her fans have given a bad reputation to her because of their toxicity, but how toxic are they?" -- Kaliyah SMith, 7th grade
Melanie Martinez is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. Her fans have given a bad reputation to her because of their toxicity, but how toxic are they? Starting in the middle of June 2023, fans of her have been changing their profile pictures on TikTok of Martinez's new look face plastered on a Strawmelly, calling it the Strawmelly or Melberry army no one is really sure why they made this, but its most likely just to try to get her more fans by joining.
In the past other “armies” have formed like the sponge bob popsicle army, and the mr beast army, and are known to always turn out as a toxic thing so no one really expected anything of this. But in late June they started saying they were better than God, and better than the military, which is obviously not true.
Though this is already a lot that has happened with the Strawmelly community, there's more. Not only did the Strawmellys say they were better than the army and God, they had the nerve to take a raid on Oliver Tree, Martinez’s ex, including spamming his posts with the lyrics of Martinez’s song “Moon Cycle,” which talks about women having periods. They did this because Tree released a song with the lyrics “I'm angry and bloody like a b*tch on her period.”
Martinez responded with a story on Instagram, saying, “Can you guys do me a favor and leave @olivertree alone. Please be nice, and stop spreading false information. I already told you guys we ended things mutually years ago and on good terms. I've said before how much it upsets me when you guys bully people on the internet. please stay positive and be kind toward one another 💐." Martinez and Tree have broken up and both feel free after separating. Martinez has made it clear that she isn't encouraging this and doesn't want Tree to get hate over something that’s in the past now.
Aniya Birchett, 7th grade vocal student says “Well, they take like random people who say ‘oh I don't really listen to Melanie Martinez I just don't really like her music’ and they dox them and leak all their information just for not liking the same artist- like, not everyones gonna have the same music taste.” Fans of Martinez have doxxed multiple people in the past, making the fandom seem more toxic than it already is.
December 22, 2018, Martinez was accused of rape by her “former friend.” This statement had spread extremely fast and Martinez has since been hated on for it, even though it took place almost six years ago and Martinez had various pieces of evidence backing up her story. In fact, Martinez didnt rape anyone- she was raped. When Martinez was still young, she was raped by her childhood “friends”. Martinez has talked about this openly because she wants to spread awareness about it. Her fans were determined to defend Martinez since they already know she hadnt raped anyone and started attacking Her former friend which resulted in only making things worse.
“Melanie Martinez is someone with high visibility, therefore her actions are going to impact the beliefs of many. She is also a consenting adult, so her behavior has different meaning but the same implications as a teenager or child. When she presents a pacifier, a sippy cup, or a baby doll in a sexualized manner, she is encouraging the association of those objects with consensual sexual activity.” said 16 year old Mary Richardson in her brief article about Martinez.
Birchett says that Martinez isn't sexualizing children, “She's just going over mental health problems and people are just overlooking it.”
Martinez was accused of stealing lines in “Pity Party,” the 8th song in her Crybaby album, “It's my party and I'll cry if I want to cry if I want to,” from Leslie Gore’s song “It’s My Party” but in fact, people are wrong. The lines in Pity Party is a sample from Gore’s song. A sample is when you include an element of a pre-existing recording by someone else in your composition. This shows how her fans will just immediately jump to conclusions without looking stuff over first.
The Strawmelly army, the rape accusations, and the song sample incident have all been covered. But are crybabies really all that toxic? Simple answer; They are so extremely toxic (most of them) the fact that all this happened had already made a bad image on Martinez and then they formed the Melberry Army and made it so much worse. At least more than half of the fandom has turned sour. Of course there are still others out there who have been loyal to Martinez, respected her and her requests for boundaries.
