“Fame-climbing Stranger Things star Sadie Sink is rumored to be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Are the rumors true?”--Zanthe Jones-Gerachis, seventh grade.
The iconic 2022 Emmy Nominated show Stranger Things’s first season was released on July 15, 2016, and the wait has been long, but finally, the fourth season came out in summer of 2022, boosting its stars in popularity, including 20 year old Sadie Sink. Not only has Sink played an amazing and challenging role as Stranger Things’ Max Mayfield, with 20.8 million instagram followers, she is now rumored to be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Sink has made it clear that she is loyal to Stranger Things and has made many good friends in the cast, but that doesn't mean other companies don’t have their eye on her. As far as rumors go, this one is true. “She will play Marvel’s Songbird also known as Screaming Mimi in the upcoming Thunderbolts project,” via Stranger Things' Sadie Sink To Play Songbird In The MCU, by Chandraboli Majumdar on the website Wiki of Nerds. The movie however, would come out somewhere between 2024-2025 because Sink is still in the midst of filming Stranger Things and does not plan on leaving the show, which she has proven that it is her top priority.
Songbird AKA Melissa Gold, formerly known as Screaming Mimi, comes with a cadre of powers, including sonic blasts, force fields, generating inanimate objects using sound energy, and manipulating sound to act like wind.
Songbird’s backstory features a disturbing childhood, such as an alcoholic father, “who was incarcerated for attempted robbery” leaving Melissa/Songbird to fend for herself. Sources and fans say Sink is a perfect fit for this role considering her role as Max Mayfield was similar, both troubled youths with a hard past.
Though Sink already has a locked role, fans have been hoping for others such as Jean Grey, from Marvel’s comics. Jean is an “evolved mutant with powerful telekinetic and telepathic abilities, further enhanced by the cosmic energies of the Phoenix Force.” The Phoenix Force is an old cosmic entity, constituting life not yet born, and “forces of creation.” Much like the situation with Songbird, Sink is an ideal actor to play this role for her experience. Another reason fans have been stating is Sink’s iconic red hair, which she and Jean Grey share.
“It’s kind of hard to imagine the girl from Stranger Things in Marvel, because everyone is so used to seeing Sadie Sink in Stranger Things,” said Mackenzie Luna, a seventh grade Literary Arts student at OSA. “Seeing her in Marvel would be like seeing Max in Marvel, but I do think she should be in a new Marvel movie because she is an amazing actor and I want to see what it would be like to see her portray a new character,” Luna explains.
“Clearly we have seen that she is an amazing actress and that she could pull off basically any character she wanted to,” Alex Stullman, seventh grade Literary Arts student at OSA explains. “I did see her in All Too Well and I was like ‘hey that’s Max’, but it was weird seeing her in another film besides Stranger Things. She did a great performance, though.”
Filming a new movie–especially a Marvel movie–will be good for Sink because Marvel is a big platform and will help Sink become more well known. She isn’t necessarily not well known, considering she was in Stranger Things, Fear Street, All Too Well, Dear Zoe and many more, but a new movie couldn’t hurt and fans definitely agree.
