"animation studios have been doing very well the past few decades but now with the PANDEMIC. how are they doing now?"--Elian Acle, 6th grade
Big animation studios like Pixar, Disney, and DreamWorks’ filming process requires a lot of time and effort. In fact, these large animation studios will in some cases only make 2 seconds of film per week. This contributes to movie budgets and their cost, because they have to animate a character's motion in the space and environment around them. Something as simple as a character grabbing their keys could take a skilled animator weeks to finish. Animation aside, multiple writers, editors , and voice actors are all involved in the nuanced process.
While many animation studios have come and gone, the unforeseen closure at such a leading animation player as Blue Sky will lead to hundreds of layoffs, not to mention the cancellation of its animated films that were already in production.
The warnings of Blue Skies Demise were immediately sounded when it was acquired by the Walt Disney company as part of its border acquisition of its previous owners 20th century Fox in 2019. This meant Disney owned 2 of the 3 major animation players in the US, following its earlier $7.4 billion acquisition of Pixar.
Over the last two decades, Disney has definitely caused alarm after buying the Star Wars franchise for $4.05 billion and has also bought Marvel for $4 billion in August of 2009. In the face of their animation success during Covid 19, the demise of Blue Sky might show a glimpse of a broader Disney corporation strategy to gain more market advantages by purchasing and then close-in on its competitors.
Let's take a look at Pixar. Pete Doctor, the chief creative officer and co-director on 2020’s Soul, says that the day-to-day quarantine routine can get exhausting. “Plus the Soul crew had only 7 weeks left for production when lock downs came through.”
Dana Murray the producer of Soul said, “Most people picked up their machines, drove home, and they were up running in a day.” The remaining work involved “backend” finessing: the technical slide.
Animation studios are trying to get through this pandemic and some are doing very well while others are failing but animating a full movie is a very difficult challenge and it takes a lot of people to make it happen. Animation has been around for so long and so many people from all ages come to see the newest and advanced version of it.In 1917 people were amazed when animation and movies in general had color in it and now people love how realistic animated movies can become because of Pixar and Disney.
