"Mean Girls, a well-known film for its crude jokes and comic violence, has made a comeback: but is it really all that good?" -- Kaliyah Smith & Ava ford, 7th grade
Mean Girls, a well-known film for its crude jokes and comic violence, has made a comeback: but is it really all that good? Personally speaking, I thought it was horrible. Not knowing it was a musical, I went to see it with friends and well, let's just say it wasn't worth the money. The movie has been described by the BBC as “too nice” compared to the 2004 film. Since musicals aren’t as appreciated, The Mean Girls remake was not marketed as a musical as to not “turn off audiences.”
Gabriella Luevano a 7th-grade Fashion student says that she isn’t a big fan of the remake, stating the movie should’ve been about the original characters’ children and not a remake
As a Latina student, I think the movie made the only other non-white girl in the mean girls group way too stupid, and made her seem as if she was some dumb boy obsessed girl. I know Karen is supposed to be dumb, but not as dumb as they made her look.
Camila Gayten, a 6th grade Fashion student has not yet watched the movie. Gaytan does not have an actual opinion on musicals but she thinks that the movie will be great and she is excited to see it.
Stella Metzner, 7th grade Vocalist has a strong opinion on musicals and dislikes them extremely and thought the remake of the Mean Girls was pointless. “They could’ve improved the movie by changing the lyrics to the songs if not only just a little bit.”
Alex Stullman, A 8th grade Literary arts student says he wished they had hired better actors for the parts, “like the girl who played Gretchen Wieners, was pretty and had a good voice, where as Cady Heron, was horrible at singing.”
Much of the cast are queer people of color, including Damian (Jacquel Spivey) and Janis (Auli'i Cravalho), from whose perspective the story is told. In the original movie, the movie is from Cady’s point of view, this really just made the whole movie weird, as switching perspectives just didn’t make sense to us.
