Encanto is about the Madrigals, a multicultural family who each have their own different struggles and a lineage of special abilities.
The thing that makes this movie so different from other Disney movies is how we are able to connect and relate to each of the characters and that it is centered around family coming together and healing from emotional damage. Throughout the movie we see different struggles that each character goes through. None of the struggles that the characters go through are unrealistic - at least not the personal ones. Their struggles consist of fears and trauma - things that you and I can relate to. We also get to see how the characters affect the family and each role they play. Even though the ending in Encanto isn’t always the ending we (might) want to have, it’s not impossible. The realism of the movie when it comes to the obstacles the characters face (emotionally), the details in the art and the diversity present in this film is what makes this film so great.
The main character, Mirabel, doesn’t have a gift and because of this she isn’t seen as equal to her family. The “villain” of the story (supposedly), Bruno, has the ability to see the future, and because of some misunderstandings, is seen as mischievous and a bad guy who sealed the fate of everyone he had a vision of - in a bad way. Isabela is Mirabel’s older sister, she has the ability to grow plants. She is meant to be picture perfect and is considered to be the golden child, Mirabel thinks she is a selfish brat. Luisa is Mirabel’s other older sister, her gift is super strength. Luisa goes around doing favors and tasks for and from everyone in town. She is always working, rather carrying something or on her way to go do something. Dolores is one of the cousins and has really good hearing, she can hear everything that goes on in the encanto - this makes her a very important character. Dolores is able to hear everything, the only problem is that she is a total gossip. Her character moves the story along, she both helps and causes problems for our main character. Dolores is able to hear everyone’s secrets, yet no one hears her secret. Dolores is stuck suffering in silence, in love with someone who she is unable to be with. Alma Madrigal is the grandmother, like Mirabel she doesn’t have a gift. She is dealing with the trauma of seeing her husband get killed in front of her and because of her trauma she became very protective and controlling over her family. She fears losing her family and because of this, she “holds on too tight”.
In the end, we witness the family heal from their trauma and fears, and come together again as a happy family. We see the characters self-reflect and acknowledge the pain that is affecting them and their family. This allows them to grow and become better as the movie advances. The family becomes closer and can now truly be happy. They no longer have to suffer alone and in silence, they have found a solution to their problems, cleared things up and can be who they want to be.
