¨Wait how was I gonna start this off. I forgot. Oh yeah¨. On October sixth, Eminem was featured in the BET hip-hop awards for his annual “Shady cypher” freestyle segment of the show. Usually, Eminem often raps about his city, his roots, and his daughter, but this time the rapper took a different route, expressing his feelings on today's political issues—mostly Donald Trump—on the mic.
Eminem's whole freestyle was a diss to Trump, titled “The calm before the storm”, bashing him for his position on racism, hypocrisy, sexism, disrespect of military veterans and more, all in just five minutes. The rapper even questioned the president’s patriotism, asking if he was even qualified for the job.
He started off his freestyle with an act of confusion:
¨Wait how was I gonna start this off. I forgot. Oh yeah, That's an awfully hot coffee pot. Should I drop it on Donald Trump, Probably not. But that's all I got until I have a solid plot, got a plan and now I gotta hatch it like a damn Apache with a tomahawk. Imma walk inside a mosque on Ramadan and say a prayer that every time Melania talks, she gets a mou... Imma stop. But we better give Obama props. Cause what we got now in the office now’s a kamikaze that'll probably cause a nuclear holocaust. While the drama pops, and he waits for s--- to quiet down, he'll just gas his plane up and fly around till the bombing stops."
According to CNN, in the line above, Eminem is referencing Trump’s war on social media with Kim Jong Un, whom the President recently referred to as “little rocket man,” igniting fear of impending North Korean retaliation
"But this is his form of distraction, plus he gets an enormous reaction when he attacks the NFL, so we focus on that instead of talking about Puerto Rico or gun reform for Nevada. All these horrible tragedies and he's bored and would rather cause a Twitter storm with the Packers."
In this part of the verse, Eminem goes in on Trump for spending days attacking NFL players, who take a knee for a good cause while Trump escalates the issue, while other serious tragedies rage on:Hurricanes destroyed Puerto Rico, Houston, and the South-East; and terrible fires ravaged thousands of homes in Sonoma and Napa counties;, and a traumatic massacre that occurred in Las Vegas, Nevada, killing.
So many artist and athletes including the former NFL star Colin Kaepernick and NBA star LeBron James re-posted the freestyle on Twitter, eliciting reactions from fans and media.Colin Kaepernick posted a Tweet saying “I appreciate you” and LeBron James posted a tweet re-quoting one of his lines saying “Racism is the only thing he's Fantastic 4(fantastic for), cause that's how he gets his rock off, and he's orange. Sheesh @Eminem!! #United.”
Almost all of the reactions were very positive, with a few exceptions. And surprisingly the negative reactions received were from Eminem’s own fans, inspired by his verse’s ending call to action:
“And any fan of mine who's a supporter of his, I'm drawing in the sand a line, you're either for or against. And if you can't decide who you like more and you're split On who you should stand beside, I'll do it for you with this: F**k you! The rest of America stand up! We love our military, and we love our country But we f**king hate Trump!"
Here are what some of eminem’s former fans wrote on Twitter after watching the video.
“I used to like Eminem's music but if you have to trash the President to stay relevant, I'm done! BYE FELICIA BYE!”
“Welp! I'm done with Eminem too. Keep it going celebs. Keep disrespecting Trump supporters, then wonder what happened to your fans and ratings.”
“I was a fan for many years now. #eminem asking for a line in the sand? You're officially a joke.”
Even though some of his fans responded negatively to the video, most of the reactions were positive. In my opinion, I think eminem murdered his verse! Him being a white rapper in the hip-hop industry, I feel like he used his art the right way telling how you feels through his art!
