Are you interested in indie games? Do you appreciate the wonderful cartoon style of the 1930’s? Do you like run-and-gun games? Or are you a gamer looking for a challenge?
If the answers to any of these questions is yes then I have a game for you! With a wonderful game that some people may not know: Cuphead!
The protagonists of the game are two brothers named Cuphead and Mugman, who live with their parental figure Elder Kettle in Inkwell Isle. One day, they wandered off and found themselves at the Devil’s casino and despite being told not to go in, they enter and start playing casino games. They’re actually really good, so good in fact, they catch the attention of King Dice. King Dice is the sleazy manager of the casino and he’s also the Devil’s right-hand man. He goes over to the table where the boys are playing and exclaims how good they are. Soon after, the Devil notices the boys and offers the pair a deal. If they can win the Devil’s bet, they can get all the money in his establishment. If they lose though, the Devil will get their souls. Cuphead ends up being blinded by easy riches and takes the bet. He grabs the dice from the Devil and rolls them on the table. Mugman on the other hand completely freaks out because he actually understands the full danger of his brother’s horrible decision
Unfortunately, Cuphead rolls snake eyes and he loses the bet for him and Mugman. The devil is about to take the boys' souls when the boys start begging for their very lives. The Devil eventually ends up making a new deal with the boys: There are debtors (people who bet with the devil and lost) who have escaped, if the boys can get their soul contracts by midnight the next day then they’re off the hook. If they don’t, then it’ll be their souls that will get taken. You can choose to play as either Cuphead or Mugman as you try to save your soul.
Storylines are very essential to a game but there are a lot of factors that make this game so awesome! One thing I love about Cuphead is the soundtrack.
All of the songs in the game have been produced by Kristofer Maddigan and have jazz-like beats. In total, there are 57 songs in the entire game, with many of them being instrumental only. The main theme “Don’t deal with the devil” is the first song in the game and is basically a quick explanation of the plot. Another great song in the game is Die House, sung by Alana BridgeWater (the voice of King Dice). Die House plays when you get to the end of each world to show King Dice all the contracts you’ve collected. There’s also a song for every boss, level, and world within the game.
Another really cool thing about Cuphead is the characters and their unique designs. For starters, the devil has blackish-greyish fur unlike the usual red people associate the king of the underworld with. Cuphead, Mugman, and Elder Kettle are basically kitchenware. Also, a lot of the animal bosses have a lot of interesting looks and career choices. Ribby and Croaks (from Inkwell Isle One) are casino owners themselves and based on their attire, could be martial artists. Werner Werman (from Inkwell Isle Three) is a cigar-smoking brown rat who is or used to be in the marines. Finally, Rumor Honeybottoms (also from Inkwell Isle Three) is a Queen Bee and also a sorceress seeing as how in her level she has a spell book and is able to turn into an airplane.
Cuphead has won many awards due to its unique artstyle and great gameplay. The game has won rewards like the 45th annie awards, The Game Awards, BAFTA WINNER GAMES, Dice 21st annual awards, game developers choice awards, and many more. Cuphead is so great in fact that it became a Netflix series this year called the The Cuphead Show! (It’s not on Netflix right now though so keep an eye out) The game also gained a museum exhibit in ACMI, Melbourne for the next decade, so see it while you can!
If you’re interested in playing the game it’s available on multiple platforms like Xbox, Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch, Steam, Windows 10, and even Mac. Give it a try! It’s only $20 and an interesting challenge. Let me know if you beat it! And if you have played it before, how did that go for you?
