"Name a better way to enter 2019! You can't. She's quite literally abracadabra-ing you into a year filled with freedom from anything holding you back." --Heaven Harps
One of the most notable, and among the very last, Twitter memes of 2017 was the “If you listen to [insert song] at [insert time] on New Year’s Eve, you will hear [insert lyric, beat switch, etc.] at midnight” tweet. Following a viral post made by a Frank Ocean fan page encompassing directions like the aforementioned to hear the beat switch in his song “Nights” by midnight, Twitter erupted with many tempting variations of the tweet. Although some were turned into jokes (classic), most of the variations were actual parts of songs you could listen to just before midnight for some really fun or deeply meaningful transitions into the new year. These consisted of songs by artists ranging from Toto (???) to Beyonce.
This year, we were gifted with many musical gems that we could follow the same suit with this upcoming New Year’s Eve -- many of them coming from none other than Ariana Grande! Despite everything she has been through this year and in recent years, she released her fourth studio album, Sweetener, in August (Queen of perseverance) and had the, self-proclaimed, best year of her career. Below are three of some of her best releases to play on NYE to ring in 2019 on a note of overcoming, growing and moving forward.
no tears left to cry
In one of the most acclaimed tracks from the album, Ariana Grande celebrates healing and wishes to share that joy with others. The song starts off slow, her voice having a subtly mournful-esque, almost as if to signify one last acknowledgement of her pain, but slowly transitions into a more upbeat tempo, exuding a feel of optimism.
If you start listening at 11:59:37, you will transition from the part that brings up all the feels into the beginning of the more forward-looking part just in time for the New Year! Let that hurt go 2k19!!!!!!
better off
In better off, Ariana vents about a toxic relationship in which she would be happier not taking part. The flow is gentle, yet extremely intent on releasing what no longer serves us. The melancholic ending embodies acceptance of the fact that we’re better off relieving ourselves of dead weight.
If you start listening at 11:58:42, you will reach the violin-accompanied closing of the song just before midnight. It can be symbolic of a peaceful release of something you’ve been holding onto that you would be better off without, going forward into the New Year.
thank u, next
Perhaps in the top ranks of the most popular songs released in 2018, “thank u, next” is the very definition of moving on. From what she gives us, Ariana is to the brim with gratitude for her ex's, but she's extracted the lessons they presented for her to learn and is just ready to let go.
If you begin listening at, 11:59:25, you will arrive at her first expression of the words “thank you, next” exactly at midnight. Name a better way to enter 2019! You can't. She's quite literally abracadabra-ing you into a year filled with freedom from anything holding you back. Thank U, next!!!
