88rising is a multicultural multimedia company that shines a light on Asian culture, including artists like NIKI, Rich Brian, Joji and Keshi. With Shang Chi, 88rising was hired to help with the soundtrack, bringing together songs that made the movie come to life. Now, these artists are leading the way for people all over the world to discover more Asian American musicians.
DPR is a label that a few artists that are in (that I personally enjoy) which stands for Dream Perfect Regime, which includes a group of Asian artists using stage names. These are; DPR LIVE,DPR IAN,DPR CREAM. Having worked together for production and music. The group also worked on the Shang Chi album. DPR LIVE and DPR IAN worked on the singing and DPR CREAM worked on the other aspects of the music. All the artists are Korean and include some Korean words in their songs to add taste. I recommend listening to “No BlueBerries” By DPR IAN and “Yellow Cab” by DPR LIVE.
Lyn Lapid, a Filipino American singer, recently made it big with a TikTok trend for her song, “In My Mind.” Tiktok has skyrocketed as the song has hit 7 million streams on Spotify. Lapid’s career started with the song “Producer Man,” which she wrote to tell a story on how a producer took advantage of her earlier in her career.. Lapid later released the song with Republic Records and in a few weeks the song broke 20 million plays. She now has a following of 4.2 million on TikTok and a following of 420,000on Instagram. Her song is now all over Spotify playlists, including “Trending Tracks” and “Viral Hits” on Apple Music. “In my Mind'' is now fifth on TikToks US Top Tracks.
NIKI is an Indonesian singer, also a part of 88rising, who had her big debut after winning the Taylor Swift contest to be an opening act for a concert on “The Red Tour.” After, she performed at the Hennessy Mid Autumn Concert in 2021.. Her song “Lowkey” has been streamed 165,107,784 million times on Spotify. My all time favorite is her song “Every Summertime,” which gives a 70s R&B and Bruno Mars vibe. NIKI is friends with rapper Rich Brian,the first Indonesian artist to hit 10 million monthly listeners on Spotify with his song, “California” featuring NIKI and Warren Hue. “Edamame” is his most listened song this month, with 65 million plays on Spotify. My personal favorite is his album 1999—my favorite track is “DOA.”
Olivia Rodrigo, a Filipino American born in the US, stopped the charts this summer with her hit, “Driver License.” But before that, she blew up on the Disney show Bizaardvark, then a few years later acting as the main character in Highschool Musical: The Musical: The Series. As Her song, “All I Want,” from the series blew up, which paved the way for her hit single, “Driver's License.” She released “Deja Vu” directly after this, and finally “good 4 u” before coming out with her first full album SOUR. The majority of these songs focused on her failed romance with ex, Joshua Bassett.
Joji is a singer and songwriter from Japan who’s song, “Slow Dancing in the Dark” jump started his music career, as it had a low beat/lofi type of music that I would listen to on a quiet night and a work day. He then released the album, Nectar which did extremely well, being his first album release in 2 years with. My favorite song of his is “worldstar money.”
Mxmtoon was considered a “one hit wonder” by fans, likely because her hit songs “prom dress” and “falling for u” were her highest grossing songs. She released her ep in 2019.. Originally from Oakland, California and her mother being Chinese, Mxmtoon recorded her ep plum blossom in her guest bedroom on a laptop and now has over 100 million streams. Her song “falling for u”, which is a collab with “Peachy,” who makes lo-fi beats to songs, has reached 234 million overall streams.. Mxmtoon currently doesn't have a label and has just been self releasing all her songs since 2019. Her newest EP true colors was used in a video game called “Life is Strange.”
Keshi is fairly well known artist in California with Vietnamese parents living in a Asian household , who is also signed with 88rising, like NIKI and Rich Brian.his latest single, “War with Heaven” was used in the new Shang Chi album and has over 5 million streams on spotify.His song, “beside you” was released in 2021 right before his song with the Shang Chi album, and has boasted 30 million streams.. As he started his music career in college, Keshi told his classmates about his Soundcloud which started his music career, from there his songs “2 soon,” “right here,” and “like i need you'' collectively reached 700 million streams on Spotify.
Having a spotlight on Asian American singers gave them a big opportunity to get the recognition they deserve and the Shang Chi album gave that to them..
