"HALLOWEEN IS A REALLY FUN HOLIDAY THAT I'VE COME TO ENJOY AND GROW NOSTALGIC TOWARDS. NOW I'VE GROWN UP, AND USING THIS OPPORTUNITY TO LOOK BACK." BRYSON SAUNDERS-BECKLES, GRADE 11
Halloween is a pretty interesting holiday, all things considered. It's one of those holidays that you don't really think about much until later on as you mature and become an outsider looking in. It's something that most occurred with age, as I became a teenager and began to see things from an outside perspective. It doesn’t exactly take much to see that I would stick out like a sore thumb if I were to go trick or treating with kids younger than myself. It’s awkward and uniquely . . . not unwieldy, but blocky. It almost has the same energy as an adult trying to be friends with a kid (Even if I don’t usually try to make friends with random trick-or-treaters during my collection of candy.) It’s pretty strange to think about.
I loved trick-or-treating when I was a kid, just like them. The young kids in their superhero costumes and ready with their candy buckets and pillow cases, ready to face the night and get the chocolates and fruit candies and get sick back at home later. That’s pretty much the spirit of halloween. If not that, then it's Halloween special and costume parties, leading to clashes in sensibilities between those who’ve done trick or treating in the past and those who’ve asked their parents about it during quarantine. I mean the young kids. The kids who’ve basically spent most of their life in quarantine and spent their whole 2 years or less of life in quarantine during COVID and heard stories about it from their siblings and parents. So where do I strand?
Honestly, I’m in a strange place where I’m a teenager and I could go out. But I also don’t have a costume, don’t plan on getting one, and mostly just staying at home, watching movies and/or playing games. Eating the candy I bought at the store (Preferably Kit-Kats or something flavorful). All things considered, giving out candy this year might not be a bad idea, even if COVID does change the Halloween climate a lot. What will you be doing this year?
