"For Adela Orozco, sanctuary means a safe space to be free and to be yourself."--Evie Ahlers, 6th grade
For Adela Orozco, a 6th grade student from OSA, sanctuary means a safe space to be free and to be yourself. For Orozco, having a space like that is very important to keep calm and comfortable. Her parents are the people who most give her a sense of sanctuary because she always feels comfortable and safe around them, and that gives her a space where she can be herself.
Orozco’s parents accept her no matter what. “I feel like they get me like no one else can,” Adela says, “If I do something wrong, like, they’ll get it.” It’s really easy to have a sanctuary when you have those kinds of people around you. For her, her home is a sanctuary. Orozco’s feelings can be shared with her parents, and that’s really what makes her so comfortable.
To be yourself and to be free is very important and very essential to having a safe space. Being free is being comfortable with who you are, and having that in a sanctuary just makes sense to Adela. Being yourself is more about being comfortable in your own skin and not stepping on eggshells to keep your true self in.
Having the combination of calm and energetic usually isn’t something you’d hear, but to Adela, calm has a different meaning than usual. Usually, you’d think that a safe space would just be some place where you can be calm but for her it’s being able to have energy to create more of a comfortable space.
“For me, sanctuary makes me feel safe. Not always happy all the time, but calm. Calm and a lot of the time, energetic.” Calm has a meaning of being serene and sometimes doing that actively can give you peace. It also can mean comfortable, and having energy can sometimes help you be more comfortable. Being lively can also relate to being yourself.
Orozco has a very beautiful meaning of sanctuary, and being able to have a sanctuary is such a privilege. Frankly, everyone should have a sanctuary yet, some people can have trouble finding what their home is. Some people even have trouble finding what home can be and mean. Sanctuary is always there for you when you need it and that's why everyone should have one.
Orozco has such a unique sanctuary, so specific to her, and being in a sanctuary is such a good exploration of yourself. Hearing about others' sanctuaries is always a very good way to learn more about them, no matter how long you’ve known them for.
