"Sanctuary’s definition is different for everyone. It’s one of those things where the meaning can differ per person, some people can find it in music, drawing or writing, while other people might just find it by being with loved ones." --Winnie yuasa, 6th grade
Oakland School for the Arts produces a yearly show that always comes before spring break. This show is tied to a theme or symbol, which changes yearly. This coming show is on April 2 and the theme is sanctuary. Sanctuary’s definition is different for everyone. It’s one of those things where the meaning can differ per person, some people can find it in music, drawing or writing, while other people might just find it by being with loved ones. For Lottie Mills, a seventh grader at Oakland School for the Arts, her sanctuary is being with her family.

“My sanctuary is when I’m at home with family, and when we’re all getting along.” Said Lottie Mills. An important memory of hers is when she was walking to the train station in Arizona with her family. “I guess it was just the feeling of peace and my family all getting along and just feeling peaceful like I could just be myself.” Mills said. Being with her family is so important to her because she feels like she can be her true self and not have to worry about what other people may think.

There are many reasons people might try to find sanctuary. Sometimes it’s trying to calm down and sometimes it’s just to escape. “I think it’s just feeling at peace, with my family I just feel like I can be myself and not have to worry about what other people say.” Mills said. Something that can get her wounded up is just arguing with her brother. She argues with him less now that she’s older, but she still does sometimes. This is connected to being with family because sometimes just being with them can bring a lot of comfort.

There are many times and places where sanctuary can be important. For some people it might not matter where you are,  as long as you are with your friends and family. For others there might be somewhere that is different than the rest, just feels special. “I like going to Arizona.” Mills said. Arizona is one of Mills favorite places because it’s where her dad was born and raised. It also just has a lot of peaceful places so it’s really enjoyable for her. This shows sanctuary can be found in many places, many people, and different things, but no matter what it is it’s always going to be a bit different for everyone.
