"Amara Deanes is a Literary Arts 8th grader at Oakland School for the Arts who has two main types of sanctuaries– her room, and her friends."-- Leo pyskacek, 7th grade
Amara Deanes is a Literary Arts 8th grader at Oakland School for the Arts who has two main types of sanctuaries– her room, and her friends. We are talking about sanctuaries because of our all school show with sanctuary as its theme. Also in the current Trump administration, many people need a sanctuary, or someplace that they can call home and be comfortable in now more than ever

These sanctuaries are really helpful to her. In an interview, she says, ”I like being by myself a lot”. Having a room of your own or someplace private that is yours, and has only your stuff in it can be a great sanctuary because you can be alone with your thoughts and know that you are free from judgement. Her room has been there for her whole life, and she has built a space that feels good for her over her life. The memories in her room can also feel comforting and like a sanctuary too.

Deanes’s friends can also be a really good sanctuary because they can be very comforting. “I don’t have to worry about what they think of me,” she says. Friends can be a perfect sanctuary because even when you’re at your lowest point a good friend supports you and does what’s right for you. Friends are also fun to hang around and they make you laugh as they say “sometimes a good laugh is the greatest medicine.” Even if you’re away from them,  you can call them or text them to feel better.

Overall these are great sanctuaries for Deanes, you can learn a lot from these sanctuaries. Even though sometimes you want to be alone, a friend can provide even more comfort, and when you’re feeling blue sometimes being alone rather than talking to someone can be best. Having a place to be alone, and having people to talk to and laugh with are two very important things and everyone should have something like that.
