"Sanctuary can mean many things to people, having one is important"--Paloma bastos, 7th grade
On Thursday, December 4th, Sayuri Espinoza, a 7th-grade Literary Arts student at Oakland School for the Arts, was interviewed about sanctuary and what the word means to her. She says it's a physical place to calm down, something a lot of us can relate to. But what else can a sanctuary be?

“I think for me it helps me start to calm my emotions and feelings,” Espinoza mentions in our interview. She also says, “I think sanctuary is a place where you can truly feel that peace where you don't have to think about all the negatives, and you can just be alone…” This gives us a more expanded meaning to sanctuary, telling us it's more than what you immediately think of, such as a place of refuge.

A place where Espinoza can calm her feelings is very important, she says, “because at times there are things I think of that I don’t want to.” It's a place where she can dissociate from those negative thoughts, which is important to her and many other people’s mental health.

“By having a sanctuary, I can let [the negative thoughts] go, and they're no longer with me,” Espinoza said. We all go through hard things, but having a sanctuary helps you deal with those emotions, as we heard from Espinoza. Sanctuary is a very relieving thing for people to have, which is why it’s important to find your own sanctuary.
