What is method dressing, you may ask? Well, it is a fashion trend where actors and celebrities wear outfits on red carpets and press tours that relate to characters or films they are promoting. Many consider the earliest example of this to be around 1992, when Genna Davis wore a baseball inspired dress on the red carpet paying homage to A League of Their Own.

More recently, Zendaya has been method-dressing on red carpets and press tours. Most recently, Zendaya has been method dressing for her latest films, including Dune, The Odyssey,
and Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

“Zendaya’s first Dune
press tour was all about sci-fi glamour. At the London premiere, she stepped out in a sculptural, one-shoulder Rick Owens gown from the designer’s Fall 2021 collection. Complete with shimmering ivory sequins, an open back, and a dramatic train, the futuristic silhouette felt perfectly in step with the film’s otherworldly aesthetic,” writes Amanda Le in 16 Times Zendaya Proved She’s Mastered The Stylish Art of Method Dressing.

Zendaya is not the only actor to embrace method dressing., Actors like Margot Robbie, who wore Barbie-inspired dresses for The
Barbie movie’s press tours and carpets, Halle Bailey, who wore ocean and underwater-inspired dresses for The Little Mermaid have also participated. Though they have all done method dressing, Zendaya stands out in many ways, because many of her outfits are statement pieces that really bring out her personality and show how much she cares for the movies she has been in. “No matter the role, Zendaya has turned method dressing into an art form, consistently finding ways to nod to a character without veering into costume territory. And now, with The Odyssey marking her latest fashion chapter, we’re reminded once again that no one commits to the bit quite like her,” says Le.

Zendaya’s stylist Law Roach, has made many of her outfits correspond to movies she has been in since 2017, when she played a trapeze artist in The Greatest Showman. “Toward the beginning of her film career, Zendaya wore a custom Moschino floor-length, one-shoulder, orange and yellow dress that transformed her into a monarch butterfly for the Sydney, Australia, premiere of her 2017 movie,
The Greatest Showman,” said Caroline Blair in 17 of Zendaya’s Best Method Dressing Looks over the Years, from The Odyssey to Challengers. This dress correlates to the movie because her character Anna Wheeler who is a trapeze artist flies through the air similar to a monarch.

And some OSA students have been keeping track of her outfits as well.“My favorite one was probably the white one, where she is showing off her natural hair. I really like the details on the dress, and the overall look,” says Parker Brewer, a 7th grade OSA student in the Literary Arts pathway, about one of her favorite looks that Zendaya has done on the red carpet. Ironically, Sofia Gonzalez, another 7th grader in the Literary Arts pathway says the same. “My favorite one, I think, was the one that was white and had, like, a silver chain going down the whole dress and down her shoulders.”

A lot of Zendaya’s outfits are statement pieces that stand out to many different people. Willa Stone, an OSA Literary Arts student in 6th grade, said “One of them that stood out to me is the one where she kinda looked like an angel. Because it just looked like she was wearing a painting,” Brewer also says, “I feel like it was the Spider Man one, that was white and her hair was, like, brushed out. It stood out to me because of her hair. It was just beautiful, cause I just love when black women have their hair out, especially in public events, and with such a pretty dress.”

These outfits can also help people decide if they wanna see that specific movie, like Paloma Bastos an 8th grader in Literary Arts, who said “Yes, cause if she’s looking all stylish, I of course wanna see what's in store for that movie.”

But what will we see her wearing for her next red carpet release? Maybe she will be wearing a swam- inspired look for Shrek
5, which is coming out in June 2027, or another Dune inspired dress for Part 3? Who knows, but they will probably look amazing.

Wesleigh this is so good. I like all the pictures you added. I’m a big fan of Zendaya’s method dressing. I would’ve written an article about it if I was still in middle school lol. Great job!
