"If you struggle to understand Gen Alpha kids then this article is for you! As a member of Gen Alpha myself, I believe that sometimes people struggle to understand us." -- Leo Pyskacek, 7th grade
If you struggle to understand Gen Alpha kids then this article is for you! As a member of Gen Alpha myself, I believe that sometimes people struggle to understand us.
Many of the kids in my school disassociate with Gen Alpha, but still do many of the same things as our generation. I feel that Gen Alphas, such as myself, don’t like being Gen Alpha because of the way they are represented online. “They are very much associated with brainrot and immaturity and I don't identify with that at all,” says Evie Alhers, an OSA 7th grader. “I would like to separate myself from how Gen Alpha is represented,” said an unnamed OSA middle schooler who didn’t agree with the way our generation is portrayed online.
But there is a stark difference between late Gen Zs/early Gen Alphas, and late Gen Alphas.
The spoiled Ipad kids that you hear about online are primarily the younger part of the generation that early Gen Alphas and Late Gen Zs are trying to disassociate from.
About the slang, most of it is just old words/phrases being recycled to get new meanings, after the old slang isn’t “cool” anymore. For example “Cooking” has been used as slang in many previous generations and Gen Alphas adopted it as their own. Ways that slang changes is when old slang gets too mainstream or if younger Gen Alphas get to it. One thing I have noticed is that one day a slang is perfectly normal and then the next day it”s “cringe.”
Another thing is that a lot of Gen Alpha kids care deeply about the environmental crisis and other issues going on in the world. When I went to the Anti ICE protest last Friday, I saw lots of kids there. “I think Trump is a terrible person, and ICE needs to stop,” Ahlers continues. This gives me hope for when Gen Alpha and Gen Z are in power.
The one thing Gen Alpha hates the most is adults trying to be cool (so please don’t try to speak our language). So please get out there and use this knowledge to understand this generation of middle schoolers better.
