"The White House has created an official TikTok account and has already gained 838.9k+ followers since early September. -- Wesleigh Stone, 7th grade
“After Trump tried to ban the app during his previous presidency over national security concerns, Trump started his personal TikTok account in June 2024, posting his first video from an Ultimate Fighting Championship fight in Newark, New Jersey,“ Many wondered why the White House delayed the ban after announcing it previously.
“I feel like the only reason they delayed the ban is so people wouldn't be mad at them, and I think they're probably doing that so people will like them, even though it's a really bad idea,“ said Alice Stewart, a 7th grade Literary Arts student
“It’s an honor,” Trump said in the TikTok video, which features footage of him waving to fans and posing for selfies at the UFC match, according to The Associated Press. The video ends with Trump telling the camera: “That was a good walk-on, right? “
By Sunday morning, the AP also reported, “Trump had amassed more than 1.1 million followers on the platform and the post had garnered more than 1 million likes and 24 million views.”
A lot of people, including Trump himself, credit his 2024 presidential win to his influence on TikTok.
“I don’t know if we can ascribe [ Trump's election win ] to that per se but I think it's a format for Trump to put out his message in a way to get people’s attention, like I said it doesn’t require fact checking or data collecting so it’s very eye-catching,” said Amelia Whitcomb, a Lit Arts teacher at OSA.
While Trump created a TikTok account during the 2024 presidential, so did Biden! However, his account failed to receive the same attention as Trump’s.
