It’s official: Disney is making a live action Tangled movie! Tangled has been a childhood favorite for awhile, so people had high expectations for the actors who were to play Flynn Rider and Rapunzel. When the actors were announced, Teagan Croft and Milo Maheim, however, people had mixed feelings about them.

There has been many public comments on the actors chosen for the Tangled movie. Literary Arts feels equally baffled. Many feel the actor chosen for Rapunzel, Croft (21) is not a good fit for the role of Rapunzel. Sixth grade Literary Arts student Sofia Gonzales states “she looks like a six-year-old.”

Vanessa Schulte, another 6th grade, Literary Arts student thinks she looks like a “spoiled nepo baby.” Although people have strong opinions on why Croft should not be Rapunzel, Amara Deanes, an 8th grade Literary Arts student, believes the actor should be chosen based on their acting, not just their looks. “I think the acting and singing matter a bit more than the way they look. If she [ Croft] acts convincing, then I'll be happy.”  Sayuri Espinoza, a 7th Grade Literary Arts student, thinks the exact opposite. “Her hair is not the right shade, her eyes aren't green, and overall there were better choices.”

People also felt other actors would’ve been a better fit for the role of Rapunzel. Florence Pugh was a popular opinion when it comes to who should play Rapunzel. Others thought Mckenna Grace would be a great fit. Deanes thinks Croft is a good fit because she’s a lesser known actor. “It's also good that she's an underground actor, since Hollywood tends to reuse other actors.”

Although people have different opinions on Croft, many think alike when it comes to Avantika Vandanapu, an Indian woman, who was rumored to be screen testing for the role of Rapunzel.

Because Vandanapu is Indian, she faced racist backlash from haters posting nasty comments about how she was unfit for the role of Rapunzel.

“Many Tangled lovers took those posts literally, and some supported the idea of casting her. Others responded with racist comments on TikTok and Instagram, saying an Indian woman with long black hair isn’t fit to play the role,” An NBCNews article reported.

Parker Brewer, a 6th grade Literary Arts student shares a common opinion of the Lit Arts class. “I think they're mean and not necessary, I think she would've done great.”
Evie Ahlers, a 6th Grade Lit Arts student, agrees. “That is very disgusting and disturbing that people would be so racist.”

“I think she would be a great Rapunzel honestly,” Shultz explains. “...she did really good in Mean Girls, I think she could do good here as well. Like in The Little Mermaid, they cast [Halle Bailey] even though she was not what the original Ariel looked like they could definitely do the same for Rapunzel,” Shulte explains.

People also felt quite opinionated toward Milo Manheim (24) being chosen as Flynn Rider.  “I think [Manheim] he looks very similar to the animation,” states Ahlers. Some think Manheim is great for the role while others like Gonzalez, think otherwise. “HE LOOKS NOTHING LIKE FLYNN! WHAT ARE THEY DOING TO THIS POOR SHOW! [MOVIE] NOBODY'S GOING TO WANT TO SEE IT NOW!!!” Gonzalez writes.

People also didn’t approve of Manheim being cast because of his comment on October 7th 2023 (when Hamas led a large-scale attack on Israel), where he stated, “My heart goes out to everyone affected by the attacks in Israel.” Many were offended by his sympathetic comment, believing he was being one-sided on the bombing in Israel and not acknowledging Palestinians loss of lives also due to the war between Palestine and Israel. “Due to his pro-Israel support, online critics and fans are using the hashtag #NotOurFlynn to express their disapproval,” says FandomWire.

Many Literary Arts Students such as 7th Grade Alice Stewart, think people may have overreacted. “I think that people might have overreacted… famous people should be allowed to have opinions like regular people!”

“Activists… argue that his public mourning for 'Israeli' victims, without comparable advocacy for Palestinians in Gaza, reflects a political position they oppose,” Roya News points out.

Although there is no official date of when the live action Rapunzel is coming out, people have already decided if they dislike the leads chosen or if they love them.
