Sombr, (aka Shane Micheal Boose) is an indie singer/songwriter known for his 2022  hit “caroline” or more recently for breakout songs “back to Friends,” “undressed,” and “12 to 12.” Sombr is known for his catchy choruses and satisfyingly produced and reverbed vocals. The first time I heard “undressed,” I was hooked, and I decided to check his music out. -Evie AHlers, 6th grade

The first time I heard “undressed,” I was hooked, and I decided to check his music out.

sombr really lives up to his name with his older songs, specifically “back to friends” and “undressed.” Both songs feature heart-broken lyrics about his ex. More of his songs before the break-out ones are very sad but very well written. But now his music seems way more upbeat with his first full-length album, I Barely Know Her. “12 to 12” being one of his first upbeat songs; the lyrics in contrast are still very depressing but meaningful.

Hearing his music is one thing—but being in the pit at one of his concerts and at his biggest venue so far, The Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, was as close as you can get to injecting music into your veins.

The opener, Devon Gabriella, had performed a beautiful acoustic set, creating a really calm and soft vibe, and hearing her live was a soul experience. She really amazed me and the rest of the crowd. She performed the songs "The Garden," "Second Nature," "how could you?," "Songbird," "Bad Blood," "older,” and "gone for good.” The indie songs set a really calming mood in contrast to sombr.  Gabriella gives off an air of Gracie Abrams,  another acoustic and indie singer/songwriter, while sombr has a rock, upbeat, and gut-wretching vibe that somehow mixes together.

After Gabriella opened, we had a long break between her and sombr’s set. Everyone in the pit was anticipating the moment when he would come on, and the second the lights turned off, I could feel the adrenaline pulsing through my body.

A loud noise poured out of the speakers and filled the room while excited fans (and yes, that included me) screamed in excitement. I remember thinking about how I could feel it in my bones.

They had the electric guitarist come out along with the drummer and bass guitarist as Sombr’s recorded voice introduced them as if it were a talk show.

“And, finally, the one you’ve been waiting for: the one, the only…SOMBR!”

The venue filled with screams as the lights all turned off. The song “i wish i knew how to quit you” started playing, and sombr ran out,  mimicking playing the guitar with his mic stand. As he started to sing, it felt like  all my sadness came up and poured out of my eyes. His music filled a part of me that I was missing—a healing that I was missing. It was a majestic experience.

The highlights were “I wish I knew how to quit you,” “caroline,” and “crushing.” He was really a rockstar with his performance, and everything about the concert was perfect. And as a music lover, it  was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had and, most likely, ever will have.
