"Since Donald Trump’s inauguration as the President of the United States, many want to know what Executive Orders Trump is going to introduce. Today, we are focusing on his Executive Orders regarding eliminating DEI programs, immigrant laws, declaring only two genders, and removing the US from the World Health Organization."--Violet regilio, 6th grade
Eliminating DEI Programs
The BBC reported that Trump has, “enacted moves to reshape the US military by eliminating DEI programs.” DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) programs are organizations focused on making sure that all people are treated fairly in work spaces. And USA Today says “Trump kicked off the campaign to abolish diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives during his first term. Now he's back in the Oval Office to finish the job.”

Trump also said, "We have ended the tyranny of so-called diversity, equity, and inclusion policies all across the entire federal government and, indeed, the private sector and our military, our country will be woke no longer." By saying this, Trump is implying he doesn't want people to know about the unfairness in work spaces, or for people to be “woke,” a term referring to people being aware of societal injustices.

Amelia Whitcomb, a teacher at Oakland School for the Arts said, “I think our country is attacking every part of our country, it’s too infuriating to put into words. Our country was idealistically supposed to be welcoming to everyone, but that hasn’t always been the practice, which is why we need programs like DEI. And it should be our government’s job to implement policies and laws to protect and reinforce the diversity of our country, not encourage exclusion and oppression. I think, if they are put through, these orders could destroy us.”

Immigration Laws
According to Politico, “Trump signed a slew of executive orders on [January 20th] aimed at delivering on his long-promised crackdown on illegal border crossings and immigration more broadly.” Trump has invoked the “Alien Enemies Act” of 1798, deporting 137 Venezuelans he says are associated with a Venezuelan gang, “Tren De Aragua.” Not only is Trump deporting people he accuses of being in gangs, but he also is forcing arrests of undocumented immigrants and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and holding them in detention centers, and local jails.

The article “Trump’s Week One Orders on Immigration Law, Explained,” says “Under Department of Homeland Security (DHS) direction, ICE will now be emboldened to conduct arrests in places like schools, churches, hospitals, and courthouses.”

Recently, there has been judicial push back on Trump’s executive orders around immigration. The BBC reports that, “A federal judge in Maryland ruled the government must bring Kilmar Abrego Garcia back by Monday night. The order was upheld by an appeals court on Monday.

The government has said Mr Garcia was deported on 15 March due to an "administrative error", although they also allege he is a member of the MS-13 gang, which his lawyer denies.” Garcia was deported, along with many others, to a Venezuelan jail without a fair hearing.

“In her opinion released on Sunday, Judge Xinis found that the US government had acted "without any lawful authority" and was holding Mr Garcia "without legal basis" in "direct contravention" of US law,” the BBC continued.

Two Genders
Another executive order said, “As of today, it will henceforth be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders, male and female." Trump declared one can not identify themselves as gender-neutral anymore.

The article, “Trump signs executive orders proclaiming there are only two biological sexes, halting diversity programs,” reads, “In 2022, the Biden administration allowed U.S. citizens to be able to select the gender-neutral "X" as a marker on their passports. On Tuesday, a page on the State Department website that had previously included instructions on updating passport gender markers was no longer accessible, instead redirecting to a general U.S. passports page.”

Lit Arts 8th grader Maia Cavagnolo states, “I think the law about two genders is incredibly stupid. Biologically, there are more than two genders. Most people assume it's only girls and boys, but people can be born intersex (about 1 in 1,500 people are intersex), and there are 30-40 different types of intersex. 30-40! That means, biologically, there are 32-42 different genders. Furthermore, there are tons of gender identities! Saying that there are only two genders invalidates the millions of people out there who identify as non-binary, genderqueer, trans, genderfluid, demigender, and so much more. You can't just ignore that.”

Removing the United States from the World Health Organization
Trump has decided to remove the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The official White House website explains the reasons for Trump removing the US from the WHO. The statement reads, “The United States noticed its withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2020 due to the organization’s mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic that arose out of Wuhan, China, and other global health crises, its failure to adopt urgently needed reforms, and its inability to demonstrate independence from the inappropriate political influence of WHO member states. In addition, the WHO continues to demand unfairly onerous payments from the United States, far out of proportion with other countries’ assessed payments.”

The very controversial website remarks that the World Health Organization did not handle the 2020 global pandemic as they would’ve liked. But the United Nations believes otherwise, claiming that we need the WHO. “From laboratories to battlefields, the United Nations’ specialized health agency has been dedicated to the wellbeing of all people since 1948. It is guided by science and supported by its 194 member nations, including the United States, a co-founder that on Monday announced plans to withdraw.”

What has WHO done for the world? The short answer is – a lot. The UN agency currently works with its membership and on the health frontlines in more than 150 locations and has achieved many public health milestones.” This UN statement acknowledges that the United States is withdrawing from the WHO and says key facts about why the US should not withdraw as a member.

In conclusion, we don’t know exactly what the future holds for these executive orders, but we know that they could dangerously impact a lot of people.

What a shame he's spending his time in office targeting hardworking immigrants and his own people.
