"If you’re someone who does grocery shopping at Costco, it’s a good time to check your refrigerators. Kirkland Signature Organic eggs from Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and even Tennessee can give you salmonella! " - Celeste Eagleton, 8th grade
If you’re someone who does grocery shopping at Costco, it’s a good time to check your refrigerators. Kirkland Signature Organic eggs from Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and even Tennessee can give you salmonella! Mike Snider, a news writer for USA TODAY, warns how the FDA is stepping in on some Costco eggs sold from the aforementioned places: “The FDA later classified the situation as a class I recall, the highest risk level for infection, suggesting ‘a reasonable probability’ that a recalled product ‘will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.’”
The class I recall affects approximately 10,800 retail units of cartons of eggs distributed to 25 Costco stores from November 22 of 2024. If the eggs you have are packaged in plastic egg cartons with the Kirkland Signature label on the top, and has the UPC code 9661910680 from any of the aforementioned states, you should not consume them and should return the eggs for a full refund or dispose of them.
According to John Hopkins, salmonella bacteria is passed from the feces of people or animals to other people or animals. Most common sources of bacteria are usually from beef, poultry, seafood, milk, and eggs. Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever, nausea, vomiting, chills, headache, blood in the stool, serious illness, signs of dehydration, high fever, and blood in poop.
How did this incident happen? Bill Chappel from NPR received information from the retail farm Handsome Brook Farms. The farm states, “the eggs were not intended for retail sales, but were mistakenly packaged and distributed.” The FDA says that, "eggs from a positive Salmonella environment were shipped into distribution to retail facilities.”
Have there been any deaths? No, there haven’t been any confirmed deaths or even cases of people experiencing salmonella from the eggs. Though the consequences of consuming the eggs may not have been severe for the average person, CDC still states that, “children younger than 5 and adults 65 years and older, or people with weakened immune systems, could experience more severe symptoms of salmonella that could require medical treatment or hospitalization.”
It is terrifying to think of the consequences if this hasn’t been avoided. There could have been a big outbreak of salmonella that could have been extremely dangerous to people more vulnerable to having to require hospitalization. This shows why FDA warnings and health inspections are important for public health and safety. Although this has been a close-call, who knows when there can be another incident that could have us all in danger?
