IT IS OCTOBER, AND AMONGST THE THOUGHTS OF PUMPKIN SPICE LATTES AND THE FACT THAT UGG SEASON IS BACK, IT’S ALSO HALLOWEEN. - MIA HASKINS
It is October, and amongst the thoughts of pumpkin spice lattes and the fact that Ugg season is back, it’s also Halloween. Towards late September and early of October, clowns began to get more attention here on the west coast. According to TheVerge.com, it all started in South Carolina around mid-August when people claimed they saw clowns in the woods outside of Greenville, kids claimed they saw them carrying green flashing laser lights and some showed kids large amounts of money. After this incident had been reported, there were soon many cases of other who were most likely copycats. . Later other cases were soon discovered in states such as: Kentucky, Ohio, New York, and California.
One of the first clown cases happened in May of 1981, in Brookline Massachusetts. Kids had told their parents that they had seen clowns trying to lure them into a van. That caused panic across the northeast and midwest. Around the same time, Stephen King came out with a book titled “It” about a scary clown that popped out of nowhere and scared children. Others referred to the actual killer clown John Wayne Gacy as the influence to other cases while they were only labeled as copycats.
Almost a decade later a woman by the name of Marlene Warren was killed by a clown on her door front. Just as she was being killed, her son was pulling up to the house and was able to see the getaway car. This led to the identification of the killer being found 4 days later. The car was tracked back to Marlene’s husband who quickly denied killing her. The police later found out he had a mistress and she became a suspect. They found neither person’s DNA so the cases were dropped and Marlene’s clown killer is still free.
There have been many cases of clowns here in the Bay Area this month. In mid-october a man named Sadiq Mohammed decided to prank people by jumping out of a bush. He happened to scare the wrong man while in a clown suit in Stockton, CA. This prank went horribly wrong. Right after he jumped out, the man began to question Mohammed and said “You really gon do that in Stockon bruh, that s**t dumb a** played out!” The man then pulled out a gun and pistol-whipped Mohammed who immediately ran away.
Earlier this October, a mother and her one-year old daughter were sitting at a bus stop in Concord, CA when a clown sat next to them. The clown then reached out his hands and tried to grab the baby right out of the mother's arms. The mother then proceed to run away. The police tried to looking but had no luck finding him even though he fled on foot.
On Friday October 7th, 2016 the Oakland Unified School District had a “lockout”. No one was allowed to leave or come into the school unless an emergency arose. The lock down, which took place from 12 pm to 2 pm, happened due to threats to specific schools within the district which led the situation to get out of hand. Threats began Tuesday of that week on social media and apps such as Tinder, Ask.fm, and Instagram. After lock down, regular school and after school activities continued. Now that October is coming to an end the clown activities have died down. Hopefully the “killer clowns” were only for Halloween and once November 1st hits, it’s all going to be over and forgotten.
