Recently Electronic Arts has planned to release a Sims movie, but will it pack the lore and nostalgia of the games?
The Sims franchise has been a major name when it comes to pop culture, it's an open ended game, with no primary objectives to achieve. Hailed as one of the biggest computer game franchises of all time for having sold more than 200 million units worldwide, it has stood the test of time. The Sims has a simple premise: creating a family, building them a house and guiding them to achieve their hopes and dreams (or simply putting them in a swimming pool and selling the ladder) It remains popular more than 20 years after it was first launched.
The Sims movie, announced in early September, is said to star Margot Robbie, and will be produced by her production company LuckyChap, whose works include Promising Young Woman, Saltburn and Barbie.
EA’s vice president and The Sim’s general manager Kate Gorman hopes the film will follow in the footsteps of

The Barbie movie for having a huge cultural impact.
“It’s very much rooted in The Sims universe,” she told Variety. “And what we want is to have a truly authentic ‘Sims’ experience brought to a theatrical release. So what you’ll see from us is that we have been wanting to get this right. We wanted the right partners and to make an impact the size of something like a Barbie movie. And we know there’s so much love and nostalgia – probably beyond what we would even realize – for The Sims, and so many people like us have played throughout generations.”
“There will be Freezer Bunnies. I’m sure a pool without a ladder is somewhere in there, but we haven’t finalized any of those details. But that’s the idea, is to say that it lives within this space. It’s a nod to all of the amazing play and creation and fun that people have had over the last 25 years within The Sims.”
The company also announced it's partnering with Amazon MGM Studios to make a movie based on The Sims. Although no release date or plot details were shared, there are a couple theories on what the plot is, Sayuri Espinoza, a 6th grader in Literary Arts says, “I would expect it to be about Margot Robbie finding out she’s a Sims character and having an existential crisis, because breaking the fourth wall would be a great addition to the movie”
“Teaming up with renowned Hollywood powerhouses, this exciting new chapter for ‘The Sims’ will bring its magic to millions more fans,” EA Entertainment president Laura Miele shared in a statement, via Variety. “It’s a testament to the enduring power of this beloved franchise, which has captivated more than 500 million…”
“They saw that the Barbie movie was such a hit, so they thought why not do it for the sims, the game is getting less popular, and I think this movie will help it get popular again,” Sayuri said.
With the rise of popular video game based movies, the Sims movie is sure to be a massive hit. EA did not share any story details or tease when the movie might hit theaters, but alongside the Monopoly movie (also produced by LuckyChap) they are sure to impress. With the rise of popular video game based movies, the Sims movie is sure to be a massive hit.
