As of recently, the Pixies have announced the release of a new album The Night the Zombies Came, due to come out October 25th. This announcement brings excitement for Pixie fans all around.
The Pixies formed in 1986, quickly becoming an important part of rock music culture. Securing their legacy by influencing famous bands such as Nirvana, Weezer, Radiohead, and The Smashing Pumpkins. But they’d unfortunately disband in 1993 before a reunion worldwide tour in 2013.
“The new album features apocalyptic malls running with zombies and medieval themed restaurants in the lyrics with their classic “surf rock” sound and the distinctive dry drums of 1970s era Fleetwood Mac” where the drums have no ring. It’s the first Pixies album to feature their new bassist Emma Richardson, who was drafted in as a replacement for Paz Lenchantin. Before joining, Richardson had been a member of Band of Skulls for the past decade. The famous bassist began touring with the Pixies after Kim Deal left the band in 2013 and was soon appointed as the band’s full-time bassist.
“The Pixies make great music already and I'm positive this whole album is going to be a hit,” says Camila Gaytan, a 7th grader at OSA in the Fashion Department. “I’ve loved the Pixies for a while now and I feel like all of their albums have a big story and background behind them. Pixies really itch that loud, crunchy sound of punk rock.”
The thirteen tracks released on the album so far are “You’re so impatient”, “Chicken”, “Motoroller”, and “”Oyster Beds”. All contributing in their own way to the classic surf rock sound of Pixies. “Chicken,” which accompanied the album with its announcement, was met by widespread acclaim. The track, which had huge Digital Signal Processors support on release, has also just been added to Spotify’s biggest rock playlist MARROW with 4,564,473.
Frontman and visual artist Black Francis, born Charles Thompson, says that's particularly evident in their slow or midtempo songs — the ones where they value space and reverb — an energetic choice as well as a musical one. Ultimately, though, the success of any Pixies album is dependent on what Black Francis brings to the table.
And among the 13 tracks on The Night the Zombies Came, there isn’t a single dud.The Night the Zombies Came is another surefooted step forward for them, an album on which they seem to have reconciled their past with their other albums and are determined, with their new lineup, to forge a new direction.
